TOUGH CONDITIONS COST IDDON AT SILVERSTONE

Reigning British Supermoto champion Christian Iddon was one of a number of riders to fall foul of challenging conditions at Silverstone during his outing in the latest round of the Fuchs Silkolene British Supersport Championship.

Christian joined forces with GNS Racing for the penultimate round of the season but was forced to fight against the elements as he looked to achieve his pre-event target of a top ten finish.

After practice was held in the wet, Christian made the most of dry conditions to set the twelfth quickest time in qualifying before rain returned for race day. After a good start in the race, Christian managed to avoid a multi-rider accident at Copse which saw the race red-flagged, but started to suffer from a misted visor on the restart.

Despite battling on with limited visibility, Christian was eventually left with no option but to retire from the race. Team-mate Sam Lowes secured victory in the race to clinch the 2010 title.

“Conditions in practice were difficult but I enjoyed it and qualifying was my first chance to ride the bike in the dry,” he said. “We made changes after first qualifying and twelfth was okay considering it was my first real chance to learn the bike and try and make improvements with the team. I felt there was more to come on race day.

“In the race I got a good start first time round and avoided the crash that meant it was red-flagged but after the second start, my visor started to steam up and I couldn’t see clearly. I continued for as long as I could, but it was simply too dangerous to continue and I had to park the bike. That’s not an issue I’ve ever had in a race before, but I wasn’t the only one on race day. Despite retiring, I really enjoyed working with the GNS team and learning more about the Supersport bike and it was good to be involved on the weekend they clinched the title.”

Christian is now working on a deal to compete in the final race of the year at Oulton Park.
